Is the stator bad?

I have a 65 HP johnson, around a 1985 model, that when I pulled it out this spring started right up. I had ear muffs on it but I think they were not on right and the motor overheated. After about 10 minutes the motor died and I found I had no spark on all three cylinders. I did notice some black tar looking stuff that could have leaked from the coils. I have no problem buying another stator if I could be sure that it is bad. Is there anyway to test it? I would hate to spend $200 plus to find out that it was not the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No! Your stator should not be the problem, but to check, disconnect the yellow, yellow-gray leads from the stator, an ohm's reading across these to lead's should read 1-2 ohms. Connect on meter lead to ground, other lead to yellow, than yellow-gray, you should have an infinity reading, or in other word's, no short to ground. I would guess you have an ignition pak failure. If you have coil's leaking insulation, replace those too, as they can cause a pak failure.
