Is the quote insane?

I just got quoted $600 for rebuilding the carbs on my '84 Johnson 150 V6. I got the same quote from two different shops. That seems way out of line to me. Am I wrong on this? If a rebuild costs $15 each, thats $45 in total parts. At $80/hr in labor, they are estimating 7 hours to rebuild three carbs.

Looks like I will be learning how to rebuild some carburators.....LOL

While that price does seem high, there are other things to consider here.

The kits are a bit more than 15 each, they are quoting full rebuild kits with floats and all in case needed.

After removing, cleaning, rebuilding, re installing, there is tuning, linc n sync, then they move it to the test tank and fine tune it.

I do it on the side, and I find that it is everything else that you need to do, which takes more than the actual job itself. Just something to note.

People often start with the carburetors when there other problems with the motor.------What is the motor doing / not doing that leads you to believe the carburetors are at fault.----There is very little that can go wrong with them.

Well, its been sitting up for a few years with old gas in the tank. I got as much of the old gas out of the tank and filled it back up with 93 octane. Even while sitting up, I would take it out and crank it up a couple times per year. So, it hasn't been fully neglected.

I've taken it to the lake three times this year. First two times, the motor had to be choked and fast idled considerably before idleing normally. She then ran like a top at cruising around the lake. The third trip out, I never made it off the boat ramp. She would crank (cold start method only) but would not maintain an idle. As long as I had it at fast idle and feathered it, she would stay running. However, she would cut off every time I moved the lever to normal idle.

Remove the high speed jets from the bottom of the float bowls and inspect them.----Carburetors do not have to come off the motor to do this.
