Is the Force with me ? To Force or not to Force ?

I have 1984 Force 85 HP for 24 years, bought it new.

Over the years I have replaced every part except the block, carbs and lower unit.

I run it a fair amount, I would guess 100-150 hours a year.

Last year stator broke, so I replaced stator. Ran for 1 day, and broke again, so I replaced all the other electrical parts only to find that the new stator was bad. CDI electronic made GOOD on the stator, no questions asked, but now I have paid $900 in parts.

Had the block rebuilt in 1994, but this year to block BLEW UP again.

Everything else is well taken care of.

So......what do you think ?????

1. Rebuild the block myself. I am good mechanic, but I only have basic tools.
2. Buy a REBUILT block for $1500 (Will the lower unit go next ?)
3. Buy another USED Force, and use my new parts.
4. Buy a DIFFERENT engine, and start over.

Force Engines seem to require a lot of repair work, but then again I have had this one 24 years, and I run it a lot. But a friend has a Johnson, even OLDER, and he never has anything go wrong. (He doesn't drive it as much either.)

Am I being too critical of Force Engines ???

Please post your thoughts !!!! THANKS !!!!!

Mark

I have an 84 Force 85hp purchased new at the boat show in the winter of 84 on a 16 foot Capri. So far we have replaced the plugs with no other maintenance or preventative maintenance ever. It has been the most bulletproof piece of machinery I have ever owned. I say time to cut your losses and move on. 85 hp isn't that expensive to replace.

It is a buyers market right now for boat items. Part it out and get you something you can run another 24.....

After my experience with Chrysler / Force I would recommend buying a Johnson or Merc my .002

can you be more specific on what exactly tore up. In most cases ,if you do all the work [taking it apart and reassembling it]most rebores with pistons, rings, and gasket sets will run under $700.00 in the southern area of the U.S. And it always seems like there's going to be force whiners that are putting down these simple to fix motors[personally,if I didn't like something I couldn't fix, I wouldn't want to be around it or a group that did like it,but this being a free country, that's their option], so don't let them bother you ,any motor will give problems if not serviced correctly and often ,so its not just a force thing, its a motor thing in general. If you could be more specific like I said and give a few more clues as to what went wrong with your motor ,more help will be forth coming. hope this helps you get in the right direction
