Is resleeving possible?

Tore down 94 evinrude 200. Sleeve is gouged and cracked. I can see that some of the aluminum block behind the sleeve and below the exhaust port is cracked and broken away. Looks like the piston ring pin backed out and did some major damage in cylinder. Will a small amount of the aluminum support webbing behind the sleeve hurt anything if it is ground away and resleeved? Tried to post some pictures as attachments but the files are apparently to large. Thanks for any possible help.

Resleeving a 3 liter closed deck block is fairly common. Just be sure to chose a machine shop that's used to dealing with outboards. If you need help findingone just let us know. I'm sure we can hook you up with a good one.

Re: Is resleeving possible?

If you know of one it would be helpful. I live in the St. Louis, MO area and after talking to several dealers it seems none of them do there own machining.

Very few dealers do their own machining. If it were mine I'd send it to Mar-Fab in Tenn (800-476-1554) or Flagship (800-282-2840) in Fla. Outboard Recycle in Ala might do outside work, you'd have to ask (251-645-2050). I haven't talked to the guys at Riverside Remanufacturing in Little Rock for a while but they may still do that (501-372-0985).

Re: Is resleeving possible?

Thanks for the info. I probably won't be needing it though. I found a few dealers that machine marine engines around here and one said because the actual aluminum block casting was crushed behind the sleeve he would be hesitant and I might be just wasting money. He would be afraid of possible cracking in the water jackets. If you know where a 1994 or equivalant block woud be available for a 200 evinrude I would be interested.

You'll be way ahead to send it to Mar-Fab or Flagship. Trust me.

Re: Is resleeving possible?

I just checked the Mar-Fab website. Learned quite a lot. They have a Tech Bulletin that describes my problem exactly (migration of the piston ring groove pin). As I said I will call them tomorrow but it looks like you have to be a dealer to work with them. Thanks again for tje info.

Keep in mind that when choosing pistons Wiseco moved the top locating pin so it doesn't line up in the finger port anymore. I don't think the OE pistons ever changed.

Granted, excessive combustion temps is most likely the root cause of the pin coming lose in the first place so that should be addressed as well.
