is outdrive extended or non extended shaft

I'm in the process of repowering. I have a 88 4.3 vortex with a alpha one outdrive. I read that with a extended drive shaft you don't have to pull the outdrive but with the non extended ones you do. what is a quick way to tell which drive shaft your outdrive has. thanks Frank

Also, the reason for wanting to know the differance between the outdrives is because I just bought the boat and it was sunk in salt water. the moter was picked in diesel fuel right after sinking about 3 weeks ago and is frozen. any tips on freeing up this motor appreciated too!

As for your outdrive, the shafts I can't help you on. The motor being seized could be several things. First remove the spark plugs. If the cylinders are full of fuel or water, this will prevent it from turning over known as hydrolocked.<br />If you already done that and it still doesn't turn over, it is possible that the rings on the pistons have corroded to the cylinder walls which means a major overhaul. Providing that there is no damage to the cylinder walls. If it was mine, I would do a complete tear down, inspect all parts and replace neccessary parts. Being in salt water is not good. If the engine was then put into diesl fuel without draining the water, the two liquids will seperate leaving the salt water to do its damage. Tear it down and know what damage there is. Second guessing of what damage is done without tear down is a problem waiting to happen. Good Luck.

thanks ss, i'm getting ready to pull it and replace with a remanu marine engine. I asked a marine mechcanic about the outdrive and he said if there is enough room foward of the engine it will come out but i read in a repair manual that some have to come out and others dont so i'll find out

**** , It's only 8 more nuts,+ loosen 2 more.....then it's off,+ in your hands.......<br /><br />You've got to pull it anyway, to realien the engine in the motor mounts.... it's a good time to look it over closely.... check the joints, gimbal bearing, bellows, etc......<br /><br />the alpha1 comes standard with only 1 shaft size.... a little over 9".......same as bravo.... the old mod.1 used an 8"+ shaft lenth....

Go ahead an pull the drive like Bondo said. I'ts not hard to do and it is absolutly required if you are swapping engines. the alignment is critical...
