As some may have seen from my recent post on braking the cavitation plate. Well Johnson has agreed to replace everything except the shaft and prop. The dealer said it would be around 200.00 to replace the items and paint the lower unit. Is this a fair price to pay. some have mentioned that I am getting it Broke off. I need to hear from those who know about the labor.

thanks.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

Price the prop here at iboats. As for the shaft I don't know if you are getting it or not except for the one in your lower unit. I mean the lower unit of your engine. Actually that doesn't sound out of line. I am assuming that the 200.00 is labor only. Dealers have to pay their wrenches whether they stand around or work. The shops up north here stand around from November until April with a lot of them closed for the month of January when they go spend our money in Florida.

Since I have no idea as to what you are talking about, I'll say; not sure.

Please, do not start another post with a related question. It's confusing.

Now that I've beat you up for that, ;) here is my opinion.

If they are rebuilding the lower unit, $200.00 is VERY reasonable. You have to pay people for their expertise and labor.

Hey, you get paid for what you do, don't you? Pay another guy for what he does.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

I've just read through the other posts and possibly I've overlooked its mention, BUT I can not find any mention of damage to the prop shaft. Replacing the shaft, I would assume, would be due to it being bent out of line to an extent that it required replacing? Curious about that.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

Presumably Johnson are supplying a complete lower casing, and everything transferable from your present unit has to be put into it - yes?

Can't see why you need a prop and shaft, unless these are also damaged. If they are, then somewhere down the line your motor's taken ione hell of a knock. If they're not, why replace them?

Either way, $200 for labor changing everything looks reasonable. Make sure you get synthetic put in when they refill the unit.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

What you're getting is called a Customer Satisfaction Adjustment. Johnson is not warrantying the gearcase. They're providing it free of charge to please an upset customer, even though your problem wasn't caused by a factory defect. It is the shop's perogative to provide free labor but is in no way required to, and few ever do. They didn't make it and they didn't break it, so why should they fix it for free? Johnson is just providing the part for free strictly for PR purposes and in no way is at fault for the broken plate. That should either be eaten by you or handled as an insurance job if you wanted to do it honestly. In the future, don't expect similar consideration. You only get one Cust Sat. Don't Get Greedy cuz when you get right down to it, You're screwing Them!

Just my $.02 worth.....$200 (and probably tax) does not sound unreasonable to me. Be glad your not paying for the housing...... :)

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

Just so we avoid your next post "My Dealer IS Screwing Me", I'll warn you of a few items in advance...

The gearhousing will come primed. Spraybomb paint will be close, but it won't match 100%. The factory doesn't use spraybomb paint and no dealer has what the factory has to give it a factory paint job. That process is quite complex and the equipment costs millions.

Expect to pay for a few parts including paint, gearlube, and an impeller plus sundry gaskets, etc. Those might already be built into the $200, but they may not. That depends on the dealer. The gearhousing doesn't come with any of that from the factory and the dealer isn't going to pick-up the cost. To avoid problems, you might want to ask about that now.

Spraybomb paint will eventually peel from the primer. Like I said, the factory process is complex. The primer is epoxy and even the most careful surface preparation isn't going to help spraybomb paint stick much better. Spraybomb paint won't stand-up nearly as well as the factory paint.

Frankly, you'd probably pay less to have your current gearhousing welded and could end-up with a cosmetically superior result to the replacememt option, especially considering the inevitable peeling paint. So don't complain when you end-up paying more for a gearcase that doesn't match. Appreciate what you get even though it isn't going to be cosmetically perfect. Mechanically I'm sure it will be just fine.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

Just to add a little to WBW post, I recently found a local place that does "powder" painting. This is near the process the factory uses. If you could find someone locally that does this, you would be ahead in the future. Powder coating is a lot tuffer than spray can painting. Pay some bucks and save some down the road.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

blklab... do you mean that they are replacing everything except the shaft and prop, beacause there is nothing wrong with them, or they need replacing and you have to pay for them?

Not for nothin, but I don't know of any shops or dealerships that pay their mechanics for doing nothing but standing around. Most guys work flate rate and only get paid for the work they do that comes in the door. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten a weak paycheck or went home early,(from a dealership), beacause there was no work coming in the door, especially in the winter months. Like DJ said, If you can't do it yourself, you gotta pay someone else to do it, and their not working for free, same goes for putting a new roof on your house or getting a TV fixed, people do it to make money, no work no money.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

To all thanks for the input. To clearify one thing. For the record I am thrilled to be paying the $200.00 to get it fixed and in new condition. I also understand that it was a PR thing and appreciate there service from the company, I was just curious because others have sent me emails saying I was getting screwed paying the $200.00. I fugured That others on here would no if that was to much to for labor and paint. So having said that everyone have a happy holiday and a happy new year.

Re: Is my shop Screwing me,

OBJ's Powdercoat plan is great--and very permanent. There are places here that will do that for around $75. Plan ahead though: The casting has to be COMPLETELY empty because of the high baking temperatures(~600 F).
