Is my mercury outboard a 2 stroke or 4?

Hey guys I know this sounds dumb but I recently got given a mercury 50HP blueband motor, I've just started it for the first time using 2-stroke, the engine seemed to blow a ridiculous amount of smoke when running the 2-stroke however when I tried with 4 stroke there was no smoke and it ran like a dream.

However Im still unsure whether it was just the 2-stroke mix or whether the engine is four stroke,, I've looked around the engine but cant seem to find another oil filling area so I presume 2-stroke and the initial mix was wrong but I have no idea.

Once again its a 1983 (i believe) 50HP blueband mercury engine and the engine number is:
8055862

Thanks

It is a 2 stroke, Zorb. It is supposed to smoke using premixed fuel (50:1).

Gas with no oil in it will destroy the engine in short order.

Yeah, they'll do that :D....especially in the driveway when just started.

Zorb, you must learn to love the smoke. Breathe deeply my friend.:rolleyes: Seriously, that motor should smoke at startup, especially in the driveway. You did run it in water, right?

Zorb;

Read the "Specifications" in the maintenance information which I sent you. As you scoll down the page you will see the different sections outlined in red. Click on these for the full information for that section.

You will see that for this engine:

Breakin after rebuild is 25:1, then 50:1
