Is my 12v starting battery shorted out?

I have a starting battery and a DC trolling motor battery. Went out the other day and when I got back, I left the master switch on for a few days. No starting now. Pulled the leads off the starting battery and hooked the charger up to it. Instead of the usual charger needle going up to near the top, it pegged the needle to the top of the scale and the clips on the battery started to heat up.
To test the charger, I hooked it up to the trolling motor battery and it worked fine. Does this mean my starting battery has a short in it and is now dead, kaput?
Thanks

Could be. What voltage so you read across the battery terminals?

Starting batteries are know to go bad in as little as 2 or 3 complete discharges.

Bad battery. No hope for recovery. Sounds like multiple cells are shorted out.
