is it worth going from a 8HP 2 stroke to a 15HP 4 stroke

I currently have a 8hp 2 stroke on my 14ft aluminum boat. Boat moves along great with 1 or 2 persons, but once you add the 3rd she gets pretty slow. I am looking to get a 15hp 4 stroke. I think this should give me a lot more power and do the trick, however I have been reading that the 4 strokes don't have as much thrust. Is it worth it?, I don't want to spend the money and find out it made no difference.

Thanks in advance for your help, any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi, hatcheb.

:welcome:

First, be sure that your boat is rated for 15 (or more)HP. The performance characteristics of 4 strokes are different than 2 strokes, but 15HP is still almost twice 8HP and you should get a lot better performance.

The 15HP 4 stroke will weigh a lot more than your 8HP 2 stroke. That alone will change the way your boat behaves.

See if you can borrow a 15HP 4 stroke for testing purposes. That will be the only bulletproof way to know what you are getting and giving up.

Great suggestion. Nothing like real-world testing to verify or disqualify all the great comments here.
