is it the starter? 199 Lexus Rx300

So my wife has a 1999 lexus rx300 Suv, the first year of them and mostly Toyota parts. For the last 6 months we've been putting off an issue we can't continue to ignore. Sometimes when she goes out to leave for work she'll try and start the car and it will just click when she turns the key. sometimes it will do this many times in a row before it eventually starts just fine and no more issues. Mostly happens when cold. The battery is about 2 years old, maybe 2.5. I tested it tonight when she got home from work. 12.5 volts just sitting there. I turned on the headlights, AC and stereo and it dropped down to about 12.02. I then started the car just fine (but was already warm) and it moved up to 13.5. I'm wondering if this would be a solenoid problem or a starter problem. I don't think the battery but tested just to make sure. My first thought is the starter. I'm resisting going to a mechanic for now. any thoughts?

You should check all the battery cable connections. At the battery and at the starter. Also check the ground strap on each end.

The battery dropping to 12.02V is not a good sign. That is a battery that is discharged around 50%. Has the battery been load tested?

If these all test out ok, I would just find a rebuilt starter. They are pretty easy to change on that engine. Same starter as a Camry, Highlander and a few others so easy to find.

There is an excellent Lexus forum at www.clublexus.com/
If you ever need Lexus parts, you can sign up for a discount that the forum gets through http://lexus.sewellparts.com/

All the parts are Toyota. There is no such thing as a Lexus part. It may only fit a Lexus but it will always say Toyota on it.

I didn't know going from 12.5 to 12.02 was considered 50% loss. Thats good to know. I'll probably take it to a local auto parts store and have them test it just to make sure. I'm still leaning towards the starter. Watched a youtube video last night that was pretty informative and looked simple. My neighbor helped me change the starter on my 5.0 boat motor earlier this season, was quick and easy so I'm pretty confident on swapping this one out. Thanks for the reply.

Do the cheap stuff first. Don't throw parts at it.

Remove, clean all the connections-both ends.

I agree, the battery is suspect but even a marginal battery will start an easy to start engine with good connections.

regardless of the battery issue, sounds like a starter solenoid to me. I think they are mounted on the sides of the starter on these cars.

And if its a solenoid, you should just buy a whole new rebuilt starter. Not just the solenoid.

pretty sure thats inferred. I dont think you can actually pick up just the solenoid these days on the "all-in-one" starters can you?

I think the solenoid is more or less integral to the starter case, but you can get parts to rebuild them;
LarryB's StarterContacts.com

I think the most common problem with these starters is the contacts in the solenoid.

6-1 and 1/2 a dozen of the other whether you replace the starter, or roll the dice with the contacts. Pieces of mind is replacing the whole shooting match.

You can buy solenoids for these.

Rockauto carries them. I would still replace everything though.
