According to the book, put it in neutral, remove 5 bolts and drop the lower unit. Is that it? Any tips/tricks or gotchas I should know about?

The only other outboard I've done this job on was a V-6 Johnson and it was more involved. I had to release the long shift shaft up at the powerhead. Getting that and the driveshaft lined up and seated properly on reinstall could be a challenge. I took to attaching a string to the shift shaft before dropping the lower, so I could 'finesse' it back into place as I raised the lower unit.

Thanks!

just need to keep an eye on the shift shaft & water tube as you are putting back on to make sure they line up properly.

Shift shaft should be splined and come apart right at lower unit. Older units had a screw together shaft

probably need to remove zinc trim tab to get to one bolt

Thanks- already removed the trim tab. I'll report back later on.

Beautiful day here- I should be on the water, but at least it's a good one to work outside. There've been darned few of them.

Okay, wasn't too hard except I effed something up and will have to redo the job tomorrow. The pee stream is weaker than it was when I started.

Okay, one question. Please try to visualize this...

The driveshaft rotates clockwise when the motor's running. I think I remember that the tips of the impeller vanes should also 'point' in the clockwise direction, so they 'scoop' water as they rotate. I was sure I put the new impeller in that way, but either that isn't the right way, or I installed it 'backwards' after all.

Thanks.

tips of the vanes should be following the hub due to friction.

Always buy the kit and replace cup and wear plate too. Just a few dollors more the just impeller
If the housing has any sign of melting then order and replace it also

Okay, so what I described was backward of the way it should be? With the driveshaft turning clockwise, the vanes should curve in the opposite (counterclockwise) direction. Yeah, looks like that's what I did wrong.

I did buy the complete kit, btw. I was going to replace the wear plate, but couldn't get the old woodruff key off the drive shaft and out of the way. Screwdriver tip and a mallet wouldn't pop it out. The plate looks to be in good shape, so unless you know a good way to get the key out, I'll have to leave the old plate where it is.

Thanks for the advice.

this is another reason to replace water pump as often as they recommend.

It takes some doing to get it out, but has to happen
