Is it possible to spin props like this?

this hasn't happened yet, just curious

32' Cruisers with dual VP 7.4s. Hull is VERY dirty with barnacles. Local mechanic is claiming that the drag induced by the barnacles could either sping a prop or blow a motor, as the amount of added drag would really strain things.

I'm willing to accept that it won't run as good as it can, but I'm curious what everyone thinks about the spun prop/blown motor theory.
Thanks!

I doubt it. Depends on how hard you push it. If you have barnicles on the hull,I cringe to think what the drives look like. Sounds like it's time to pull 'er out, clean 'er up, & do some P.M!

I don't know exactly, but here is what I think he may be trying to say. If your hull is less efficient now, then a prop that was turning let's say 4600 RPM at WOT will now reach something less. So you could be operating well below your reccommended WOT RPM with the dirty hull. So let's imagine your WOT is now 3800 RPM, while you would not see this condition under normal circumstances in this theoretical case the torque being applied to the propeller is now considerably higher than it would be under the clean hull example (less horsepower than the 4600 RPM example, but more torque). So if there is a certain level of torque that will cause the hub to fail this could be it. Also, if the engine is not capable of maintaining that torque level for extended periods then you could eventually have an engine problem. Makes some sense to me as this could truly be a deep lug condition for a marine engine that would normally never see that. Like J. said, I doubt that the hub would fail, but it is possible. Either way that hull needs to get cleaned up. :)

Yes to both.
There's way too much engine load there.

I was thinking more about this. If you really want to keep the barnacles, although I don't think they make good pets, you simply need to re-prop . . . :D

hehe... we're getting rid of the barnacles..

I was just trying not to get (more) jerked around by the local repair shop. They won't do a test drive to verify their repairs until we get it cleaned.

Like you have a choice... :)
It'll be like a totally different boat with those gone.

Do barnacles or mussels ever start home inside of the cooling system? I/O or O B? If yes, how do you break their grip and blockage?

cyclops---we had an issue in the Illinois river with zebra mussels growing inside of intakes if your boat stays in the water.

Flush the unit with water and Clorox to kill any critters.
