Is it possible to adjust the shift rod height without removing the lower unit?

I have a 90 HP 4cyl. Johnson outboard year 1990. MY lower unit is a long version (not extra long). I've unbolted and removed the lower unit to adjust the shift rod height before, but I was wondering if I could leave the lower unit attached, just unpin the shift rod from the engine head, and somehow turn the shift rod? My boat is in a boat lift, so it is a pain to take it to the boat ramp and bring it back to the house. right now, I can push my throttle forward and it sometimes will still be in reverse. If I rock the throttle forward and back, it will eventually go into forward.

Unfortunately you cannot adjust the shift rod without removing the lower unit. Besides that, the measurement is critical and is to be measured from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole... with the engine in neutral. There is no way you can make that measurement with the lower unit installed.

I don't have that measurement handy. If you don't have it, I'm sure that another member will provide it for you.

First you should disconnect the remote cables,Try shifting by hand right on the motor. This will let you know if its the shiftrod height or the cables may be stretched. Then move from there,I'd just drop the lower right in the parking lot or even shallow water.(IF IT IS THE ROD HEIGHT) Quick easy job.Have someone help it'll go even easier.
