Is Quicksilver 2-4-C grease a good choice to use on boat trailer wheel bearings?
I ask this question because when I went to my local Mercury boat shop to buy a few extra 3oz tubes of Quicksilver 2-4-C grease for packing my bearings, the guy at the shop highly recommended that I use a dedicated wheel bearing grease (such as OMC bearing grease) instead. He said that the OMC can handle the high temperatures much better that the 2-4-C. I did point out to him that the described uses of 2-4-C (as stated on the packaging) includes "wheel bearings." He replied that a dedicated wheel bearing grease is nonetheless the much better choice.
My trailer is single axle, weighs about 3,500 lbs. (with boat), and does not have brakes. I plan to tow the boat long distances (say 8-10 hours on the highway) a few times a year. Otherwise, most tows are no more that 2-3 hours is distance. I already have Quicksilver 2-4-C grease in my grease gun, which I use for my motor's grease fittings (as recommended by Mercury), and would prefer to use this same grease gun for packing my bearings with a grease packer. I prefer to not have a second grease gun in my boating tool kit solely for the purpose of packing bearings on occassion. Cost of the grease is not a concern.
Any comments and opinions are appreciated.
