I'm new to all this boating repair stuff (I'm used to working on old jeeps) so this might be a stupid question. My boat is currently sitting in a wet slip right now and I need to get the exhaust risers out of my way so I can work on some valve issues. Is it ok to pull off the exhaust tubes while the boat is in the water? Is it possible this will flood and then sink the boat? Thanks in advance for the help!

all depends on how low the boat sits. most times you can remove the manifolds and risers. cap the Y pipe with something.

I would say the top of the exhaust tube is maybe a foot above the water line. Any ideas what I could cap the Y pipe with?

plumbing caps, sewer line plugs, 3 inch pvc caps, wood dowels. most boat have the water level at or very near the flappers.
any kind of wave action could force water above the rubber and into the boat.

Ok, I'm glad I asked then. That is enough to scare me into hauling it out of the water to avoid the risk of sinking it. Thanks for the advice!
