I live in Pa. The trailer I have had the basic lighting on it when I bought it- Yellow marker lights up near the front under the winch & the basic tail stop/turn signals on the rear. I was at Wal-mart the other day & picked up a pack of 10 yellow running/marker lights. I mounted 2 on each side of the trailer, one in front of the wheel & one behind the wheel in between the rear tail stop/turn signal & wheel. Is this legal in Pa.? Just don't want to be pulled over for something stupid like a light in the wrong place. I will check on the Pa. boating web site as well. Let me know if anyone knows what is legal & whats not as far as trailer lights go. Thanks, MAXX

I am sure all states will be the same on this and you should not have yellow at the back of a trailer, same as on a car, you don' see yellow on the back, only red, if the yellow light can not be seen from the rear you should be ok but if you can ,then I would say move it.......I am in FL

Just look at the big trucks on the highway, their trailers have yellow on the front and middle and red on the rear. The ones behind the wheel should be red.

From the Transportation Safety page, this one happens to be from Oregon but the law is the same everywhere. Here is the link also.

http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/TS/Veh_Equipment.shtml

TRAILERS
1) Do trailers need lights if you can see the lights of the tow vehicle past the trailer?

Answer: Yes. All trailers regardless of size need to be equipped with the following lights:

  • Two red tail lights;
  • Two red stop (brake) lights;
  • Two red or amber turn signal lights;
  • Two red reflex reflectors (a reflex reflector is a reflector that is incorporated into the lens of the light, not a piece of reflective tape)
All of the above lights may be incorporated into one light assembly on each side of the rear of the trailer. The lights should be mounted as far as practical to the outside edge of the trailer and as far as practical to the rear of the trailer.

  • Side marker lights and side reflex reflectors.
The side marker lights and reflex reflectors on the rear side must be red and can be incorporated in the tail light assembly above if they are visible from the side of the trailer. The side marker lights and reflex reflectors on the front side must be amber and as close to the front as practical. (ORS 816.320)
Trailers that are over 80 inches wide or longer than 30 feet or that have a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more; have more light and reflector requirements. See the following DOT site for that information as well as location for all of the above lights: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/standards/conspicuity/Trlrpstr.html
Trailers that weigh 1,800 pounds or more loaded, need to be registered and licensed through Oregon Motor Vehicles Division.

You can run as many yellow marker lights as you want on the sides of the trailer.Like nlain stated the farthest rear marker should be red.

Just to clarify, there MUST be a red rear side marker. Most tail lamps (as already stated) have a LENS that is visible from the side and may or may not utilize the same bulb as the tail. Anything forward of that rearmost lamp can be amber, but not red. There is no limit (legally but not electrically) to the amount of amber lights you install so LIGHT IT UP!!!!

Go here, read the reading and when you get to the bottom of the page look at the pictures, it makes it all clear on what goes where and what color it should by law.

http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/standards/conspicuity/Trlrpstr.html

It is true that there is no limit by law on how many lights you can put on a truck and/or trailer, just remember one thing, if it is on there it must work by law, if it is not on there it does not have to work. :D

This is incorrect. The rear side marker may be forward of the rear most lamp. IE on the back of the fender. These are to be red and they are forward of the rear most lamp.

That is only if there is something wider on the trailer than where the tail lights are located.

The ones on the outer rear edge of the fenders are actually rear clearance lights and are required to be facing the rear or angled. Not considered a side marker light.
And the front yellow fender light is a front clearance light, not a side marker light. And are to be facing forward or angled.

A box type trailer without fenders protruding would not have the fender clearance lights.

Re: Is it OK to put yellow marker lights...

IF the rear-most light (the tail/stop/turn light) DOES NOT include a red side marker then a separate red marker is used as close to the back end of the trailer as practical. As was pointed out -- there is no limit to the number of amber markers. The last one, regardless whether it is a separate assembly or part of the tail lamp, must be red. Regardless "where" the last red marker is, an amber marker must not be used between the red marker and end of the trailer. Look at most semi's on the road today. Many are lit up like a Christmas tree with amber markers in front and down the side. The only red you see is at the end of the trailer.

That does not change the fact that dgirt statement is incorrect. Perhaps it is interpretation of his statement. When I read it I interpret the rear most lamp as the lamp that is typically included in the brake/parking lamp assemble. In fact there can and very often should be a red light forward of that rear most lamp.

Re: Is it OK to put yellow marker lights...

I'm a big fan of adding more and brighter amber lights to the side of the trailer. I've also added yellow reflectors to the sides of mine.

I am constantly in fear of stupid drivers who will whip out or back into the right lane on the freeway just inches behind my bumper after I've passed them. On numerous occasions, I've thought to myself good thing I wasn't towing a boat, but I feel that sooner or later someone is going to try to whip out right on my bumper at night and not realize there's a boat back there.

I'm also afraid of having my boat run into while parked in a parking lot. With a boat you tend to have to park in the middle of nowhere where there's lots of space and I'm afraid of some numbnuts going wheeling through the parking lot and not realizing that behind that SUV sits a trailer with a dark red boat under a dark blue cover on top of a black trailer. So I tend to leave my marker lights on when I'm parked in rest areas, stores, and fast food places. Just to give added warning for somone who's not paying attention.

Bottom line is that I think more yellow lights AND more reflectors both red and yellow are always a good idea.

Just going by what our U.S. of A. government has decided as shown in the link posted by nlain:

the simplest way to put it is that if you can see it clearly from the rear it must be red, all other angles may be yellow

So am I. Not sure what the confusion is. Not trying to be an *** just trying to make sure a fellow boater does not put lights on his trailer that will cause him grief.

That statement is incorrect. There can be red lights forward of the rear most lamp. That is all I originally said and I stand by that statement. It is obvious in the picture below that there is a red light on the fender forward of the rear most lamp. Here in Montana, every light rearward of the fenders have to be red and anything forward of the fenders can be amber, the only amber lights allowed behind the fender are turn signals, other than that they must be red.

And don't ask how I know!

:rolleyes:

Re: Is it OK to put yellow marker lights...

In PA PennDOT lists this for trailers:
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/vehicle_code/chapter43.pdf

The general rule of thumb is that all lights facing rearward are red plus the rear most side marker which in most cases is incorporated into the tail light. Any lights ahead of that are amber. On most boat trailers this usually means that anything ahead of the fenders are to be amber. You can have a rear facing red marker lamp on the back of the fender, this is usually only done if the fenders extend beyond the width of the tail lamps. Trailers over 80" require three red marker lamps mounted facing rear centered between the tail lamps.

No amber marker lamps should be visible facing rearward.

I do see that most new trailers don't even have an amber side marker on them, only two tail lights. This seems to be the norm lately and I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for it.
It may have something to do with how far behind the tow vehicle's tail lights the next light is?

WHAT???? This got confusing real quick for me. It's like trying to read court documents or something. Here's what I'm going to do: I'll post up a picture of my trailer at night with the lights on from the sides & rear, then someone or everyone can let me know what the deal is. Thanks for all the reply's, I'm more confused now than before......:D

First, I just bought that same 10 pack from wallyworld, so I thank you for starting this post. I had a narrow miss by somebody merging at night just 2 weeks ago, guess they somehow missed that extra 24 feet following closely behind me, the phone call they were on was too important. Idiots!
