Is it a Mercury or a Force?

I have read quite a few of the listings and now I am totally confused. I have a '93 Force 70 that has Mercury/Mariner plate on it. I know Mercury bought Bayliner thus aquiring Force around 1989. Is my engine a hybrid? Can't find a 70hp Mercury OB on NADA, but can find Force 70 which is listed as "out of production".

I found a serial # OE023524. Listed on registration as Mercury Force 70. Engine cover has FORCE 70 printed on it and the engine is black. Hope this helps.

Not a Force expert but am pretty certain you have a Fullblooded Force 70hp.
Unfortunately Force is an orphan. Merc. is no longer manufacturing parts and some have allready become hard to find.
Dont panic parts will be around for some time
but may require a little searching and deep pockets.
Watch your maintenance carefully the Force has a reputation for poor reliability and performance.

Looks like from 1990-1995, it would be classified as a Force. I only see the Merc. 70 going through 1989. Best I can come up with!

Re: Is it a Mercury or a Force?

Thanks to everyone for clearing up my confusion. Unfortunately I have recently experienced a problem. See my posting on Nov. 11 "'93 Mercury Force 70 h.p. clatters" (3:12pm). Thought it was a Mercury so I ordered the Mercury manual (Chilton's) that covers that year and hp rating. The manual description was dead on with the specs. :( :(

Your engine is basically a Chrysler with a Mercury lower unit and a few upgrades. Mercury dropped it because "The force line is old technology". Apparently Mercury didn't feel it was worth bringing it up to date. You might have some luck looking for Chrysler parts.

Hope this helps.

Craig

I do own a Force 75 HP - 1998 and so far I have no problem to get parts for it - just go to a Merc. dealer and they should be able to get what you need

Mario
