is fuel filter necessary? in my M40C tohatsu

i was wondering if the inline fuel filter is needed on my tohatsu motor. i recently installed a external fuel water separater filter. i am concerned that the fuel filter is preventing the proper flow of fuel. if possible i wanted to bypass the fuel filter on the engine.

You need a filter. The water separator does not screen against small pieces of trash.
