I was thinking about buying a used power head and having it shipped from TX to OH. All the estimators I checked were around $500!

Any ideas or particular places to check?

How big/heavy is this powerhead? And who is going to pack or crate it and take it to the shipper?

FedEx and UPS will take up to 70-80 pounds. More in some cases. Like Fed-Ex will take over 80 pounds if it is going to a commercial address. You can look up the rates on the net.

Commercial shippers (like iboats) get huge truck freight discounts. Any chance of getting somebody to ship it with their regular stuff if you give them a nice fee?

Speaking of iboats, any chance they might have the powerhead you need?

I am in Tx. Who is the seller?

Private or commercial?

There are a few places you don't want to deal with around here.

I had a rebuilt powerhead shipped from Fla to NJ, about 5 years ago for $70 round trip. Obviously the company who rebuilt the powerhead got a good discount. The powerhead was a inline six Merc, weighing about 125# I would guess, as I could lift it myself.

It is the basic engine minus the lower unit, upper housing, accessory items. Sort of like the engine in your car minus the tranny and all the accessory items.

Easy way to find out is to ask the seller for the shipping weight and crate dimensions. The rest of the cost is probably for the crate and handling. It sounds high I'd think more around 250.00 would be in the ball park. A bare V-6 2.5l Merc block ships for 70.00 UPS to Texas from California.

Wow! Lots of responses and prices all over. UPS wanted an additional $80 fuel charge. Seller thought he could ship it for less than $225. Freight company I checked said $150, which I negotiated down. What I found is that the quote is just a proposal to ship, you can negotiate. Who knew?

By the way it's a used power head...

Thanks for the replies.
