Is "Drive Oil" The same thing as lower gear lube?

I'm trying to make sure I stay on all the fun maintenance with my new (old) I/O. I hear drive oil tossed around a lot. I think it is, but I want to confirm that its the same thing as lower gear lube? Or is there something else in the out drive further up?

To me drive oil would be the same as lower gear lube. No other kind of lube in the outdrive farther up.

Yes! Gear oil = Drive oil, Outdrive oil, Sterndrive oil, Etc.
Gear oil DOES NOT = Outboard oil... that's for outboard engines that are 2 stroke

That's what I thought. Thanks for making that clear. I'm new to the whole I/O thing; had to make sure Drive oil might be the easiest maintenance there is for an I/O...

It is fairly "easy"!


Just understand, filling the drive with "drive oil" incorrectly, can destroy it!

yep. creates air pockets and you'll never get enough gear lub in since the air has no where to go.

That's the "BEST" way to destroy one!!

As an example........... filling an OMC Cobra like a Mercruiser SHOULD be filled will destroy the Cobra!!
