I have a 1987 Kawasaki JS 550. It only clicks when you press the start button. Does anyone know what this is??

could be a locked up pump,, a bad starter,, a bad ground wire, a weak battery, a frozen drive shaft bearing or a locked up engine.

Can you rotate the crank by hand @ either the crankshaft/driveshaft coupling or at the driveshft after removing the intake grate?

remove the spark plugs,, go to the drive shaft coupler at the rear of the engine and see if you can turn over the engine with by hand

The engine is not locked up. Everything turns freely. It has been sitting for a year. Will it need a carb cleaning??

Starter or Started solenoid is locked up. Use a jumper and apply 12V directly to the starter motor to determine which is bad. If motor turns over its the solenoid, if not its the starter. If it has only been a year, you shouldn't need to clean the carb, however I would drain the fuel cell and replace with known good premixed fuel.
