Re: Is a Junction box really necessary?
A need for a junction box will greatly depend on what you have and what kind of electronics you have installed. In your case, since you have a 1962 40hp, without a generator, you can mount your electronics, under the hood of the outboard, and not be worried about rust and corrosion. However, in that model of motor, you do have the option of upgrading your electrical set up and adding a generator and voltage regulator, so you will then find a need to find a water tight box to mount near the transome of your boat to hide all this stuff. I happen to own an Evinrude 40hp of your vintage and have worked with several of the same class, so the option is yours, as to wire it up for a future application of a charging system or not. If not, then mount the starter solenoid and stuff under the hood of the motor, otherwise, get a larger junction box, incase the desire for a charging system later comes around.
