Is 32oz of gear lube enough for Alpha One lower unit?

I replaced the raw waterpump in my Merc Alpha 1 Gen 1. The manual says it takes 32oz of gear lube, and I pumped all 32oz into it, but nothing spilled out of the vent hole. It's likely that it'll take some more oil to top it off, but before I add more, I just want to check whether this is normal? or is it possible there's a leak somewhere inside and that oil isn't going to where it's supposed to go. Thanks,

tuan

The drive holds 32 oz's but the pump holds a few oz's too. You need alittle more than 32 oz's It should come out the top vent screw with the drive in the down position.

I always have 2 quarts onn hand.1 never does the full job.My guess would actually have been more than 32 ounces but i think since you cant really get all the lube pumped out of the quart and the pump it self holds a little 32 may be right.Charlie

If I recall correctly (I owner a alpha one gen 1 about 1 year ago) it took slightly more than a quart. Just keep pumping till it comes out the vent hole with drive fully down. If you remebered the small o-ring between the upper and lowe rhalf an oil leak would be rare and that would be a slow leak.

Hello, When you pump it up, pump it SLOWLY. You want to carefully expel air from the oil as it is filled. I usually pump it 3-5 more strokes after it starts to run out the upper, helps to push out any additional trapped air. Hope this helps. ;)
