iPod Dummy needs Answers

I listen to a lot of books on CD, from the Library.

Good portable CD players are getting hard to find and I keep breaking them anyway. Not to mention, they are bulky and hard to carry.

The question is: Can I download book CD's onto an iPod? If so, how?

According to the wife ...... use itunes and load the book the smae way you would any cd except.... you may have to label the chapters if itunes does not pick up the chapter names.

Also once it is loaded check that it has not repeated a chapter of skipped a chapter.

I bought here an itunes instruction book at a book store and that really helped out with doing all these tasks.

In my car the ipod has a direct connection to the radio and in the wife's she uses a Griffin Road Trip device which works fine.

itunes also sells books for the ipod and there are some public domain sites that have free books available.

Not sure if books on tape (cd) have some kind of block or not. But if you buy a mp3 player that is windows media player compatable you can copy (RIP) music straight to window media player from the cd with out convering files to itunes format. Then sync to the player. I would think it would be the same for books.

I pods use ONLY itunes format and mp3 players use several different formats and are really just a portable hard drive. They in my opinon give you more flexability and dont hold you to their brand specific player. best buy sales people can help with info on the differances. Good luck

THAT is very good to know!

My vehicle(s) allow thumb drives (Ford "SYNC") to be plugged in. That's what my music is on.

Re: iPod Dummy needs Answers

It is not an accurate statement that iPods only play an iTunes format. iPods are mp3 players like most brands and can play many different file types. This Apple support article describes all of the compatible file types.
I think the confusion may be that you need iTunes (the free software program for Windows or Mac) to put music on your iPod. This would be a true statement. As you might be able to tell, I'm an Apple geek...

Well, now I have more questions.

1. I have Windows. Don't like it but stuck with it.:(

-How do I download CD's and to where?

2. How long would it take?

3. Can either hold several books, at once? Say, 11 CD's each?

I have NO desire to "pirate" the material. I just want to listen to it and then delete it. As mentioned, I get the CD books from the Library.

CLICK HERE for a wonderful set of tutorials for iTunes and how to rip the CDs to your hard drive.

There really are too many variables to try to put it into one post on this forum.
First you need to decide if you will be using a iPod or a different type of mp3 player.

CLICK HERE for a tutorial on Windows Media Player.

As for how long will it take? The depends on the type of file you choose to save the media as, and what bit rate. If you choose MP3 at the lowest quality it will rip pretty fast. I'm not sure how long for an entire book but, for a standard Country CD it takes about 2-4 minutes.

My iPod 160 Classic plays mp3, mp4, jpg, mov, as well as the ipod specific file formats for podcasts unique to iPod. The only thing I have found it won't play is WMV, but file converters can be had for $20 if iTunes can't handle it.

Sorry DJ my terminology  format v software, may not have been correct. I'm not a techy. But what I was trying to explain was that basic MEDIA players are the easiest to learn how to use for a novice that doesn?t know how. I first bought a 20 gig I river brand 3yrs ago and loved it. Still use it today. It as easy as cut and paste to load and sync. I later bought my wife a 30gig ipod (brand) on sale. Then found out to load music into an Ipod we had to convert all of are MEDIA with Itunes software so it would load and play in their device. At that time we had 10,000 + tracks on our hard drive so it took hours to convert. I don?t know of any other player that requires you to only use their software. Most don?t require you to jump through so many hoops and core an apple (sorry couldn?t help my self) just to use their product. Ipods do have lots of capabilities and features once you learn how to use them. And wife likes hers ok now that it?s loaded with the media. Just getting there was a real pain. You asked so I offered. Just my opinion. did'nt mean to upset the apple fan. Good luck :)

Not an Apple fan by any means. If someone laid the proper amount in my hand, I would part with my iPod in less than a heartbeat. I wish I had bought almost anything else.
The iTunes software which you are locked into is terrible and often uncontrollable. Just try to delete a file off this thing. You can't (easily) use it on more than one PC. I could rant on ad nauseum about my issues. Bottom line - Apple will never get another dime out me again especially after the "authentication chip" requiring you to spend more money to get the video to work (gen 6) and oh, yeah - all previous accessories are not backwards compatible so you can chuck those in the drink.
For books on CD, this is probably the last device I would recommend as this was one of the things I wanted out of it too. I got it to work, but it's not clean...could be the freeware books too (?). There are may public domain books out there, mostly classics. If you read a lot, you've probably read most already and will chew up these resources quickly.
While iPod format books are plentiful online too, I hate purchasing this format just because of the possibility of the device crashing and losing everything.

All of our phones work with Sync. LG's and Blackberry's. That system I am very familiar with. The Second Gen. is even more powerful.

Phones just happened to be on the list but I really posted the link for the mp3 listings further down ;)

Re: iPod Dummy needs Answers

My 2 cents...........

I have an 80G Ipod Classic. I have 17,000 songs and a few hundred pictures on it and still have plenty of room to add stuff yet if I choose to do so.

As others have said, you can put just about everything on an Ipod. You need to download itunes to do it, but usually itunes can format whatever it is you have into a format the Ipod will play. After you get used it it, I find itunes just as easy to work with as anything else.

Durability for me is the main factor. I use mine every day at work for 8-10 hours at a time. (btw there is still plenty of charge left even after that). My dad had an Insignia which is Best Buy's brand and is actually rated very well with consumer reports. He uses it as much as I use my Ipod if not more and he is now on his second one. It was very easy to use and had some nice features like bluetooth connectivity that gave it some advantages. It just couldn't last up to constant use. He has since bought a 120G Ipod Classic.

Basically.......

Ipods are nice because of their size capabilities. Zunes are basically the same in that category and actually are very nice MP3 players. The problem is that they are also very compatable in price with the Apples and don't offer nearly as many accessories and add ons. That is possibly Ipods greatest advantage......there are hundreds of cases, sound docks, charging docks and other accessories that the other players just don't have. Especially when it comes to connecting it to a car audio system.

The other brands are good and can be great depending on how much stuff you have to put on them and how you plan on using the player. I don't like the ones without a video screen to see whats playing.......some aren't real easy to navigate either. They typically aren't as durable.........but the price is right.

DJ feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

Re: iPod Dummy needs Answers

Thanks EVERYONE. Great information.

I'm getting the sense that iPod is a bit more cumbersome for my intended use.

I need: K.I.S.S.

All I need is:

1. Download CD's into it.

2. Plug headphones into it.

3. Can plug it into MP3 port in car(s).

4. Has a charger (don't care what kind).

That's it.............................

Muah...LOL

Keeping it simple...

Got to Wal-Mart and buy the cheapest MP3 player you can find.

Load CD into your CD-Rom drive and rip it to Windows Media Player, using the USB cord that comes with your bright new shiny MP3 player plug it in and sync your favorite Book on CD to your MP3 player.

Assuming you've installed iTunes,
Insert CD preferrably while connected to the internet.
Click the Import button.
Done.

By default, iTunes plays the songs. If you stop the song, the import process goes faster.
