Pulled the cover off the boat today to find a crapload of mold on almost every piece of my upholstry! I know it will come off, but what would be the best way? Bleach blend? Pressure washer?

Cleaning it by hand would take days!! Hopefully a decent pressure washer will take it off.

Any suggestions? Also, how can I keep this from happening in the future? Im getting a new cover soon so hopefully that will help.

I wouldn't pressure wash the inside of the boat. You'll tear right through the seats that way. It start with a mild cleaner before I move to something more aggresive. I'm a fan of Zep brand citrus orange cleaner. Decent strength, somewhat color safe, decent odor, doesn't destroy material or your skin. You can find it at home depot for 10 bucks a gallon. Pour some in your favorite spray bottle.

For us, hot soapy water and a rag on the vinyl, and dry throughly, carpet webbing headliner, mold remover spray, soft brush, hot soapy water, rinse.

You can buy a mold remover/maintence @ Home Depot, in the paint section. The exact name evades me right now, but it's in a lime green bottle. I like it fine.

Youi can take a bar of IVORY soap, and a cheese grater, shred the soap, and put it in hot water, to wash your seats down too. I like that as well.

After you try all the tips given here, please respond and let us all know what worked for you. I have been trying to help a friend for 3 years now with NO success. The upholsery cleans up OK and the mold doesn't return, but the black stains persist. I even tried sandpaper in an out of the way place without luck.

Still looks like hell.

Mr. Clean's Magic Erasers are AWESOME for removing mold & mildew from vinyl & fiberglass. My boat was a mess when I got it, but it cleaned up really nice with a couple bulk boxes of Magic Erasers & some elbow grease. Case in point:

Simple Green also works wonders. I went through at least a gallon of the concentrated Simple Green too on this boat, but it looks nice now...

Tilex mold and mildew remover works good but be carefull on the upolstery stitching

spray it on and let it sit for a little bit, keep it moist with more spray as needed. hose it down and then go for the magic eraser for stuborn spots.

Yup, magic erasers! They clean everything, just used them to clean brake dust off the chrome rims of my truck. used them last year to clean lake scum off the boat (long story) that just wouldn't power wash or even scrub off with a cloth.

Question though, they must be abrasive to work the way they do, has anyone experienced gel coat damage with these?

There's a product and I can't recall the name but it's a gas chlorinator treatment for boats. First one is a 24 hour shock treatment and it gets in all surfaces that you can't reach and kills the mold, mildew and smell. The other is a stabilizing treatment for keeping it from returning.

Unfortunately, those black mold stains can never be completely removed.

Re: Invasion of MOLD!!! Cleaning tips...?

Well fellas Im in a happy mood today!! I removed all the seats and took them home and started to clean them.

I ended up buying Clorex Clean Up and a few Magic Erasers. I sprayed the seats and let it set for about 3min, scrubbed them with a brush to get in the cracks, then wiped it down with a cotton rag and came back with the magic eraser for the stubborn spots. Then I rinsed them thouroghly to get the clorox clean up out the stitches. Let them dry in the sun for about 20min.

I couldnt be more happy with the results!!! They look better than when I bought the boat. I was a lil weary about using a bleach blend but I made sure I rinsed them real good.

From now on Im taking my seats off at the end of the summer and storing them in my garage! Now I have to tackle the boat, cause she has some mold on the accent upolstry as well as a lil on the gel coat.

Thanks for all the tips, but I highly reccommend this cleaning procedure, just make sure to rinse real good after your done.

My wife swears by these Magic Erasers.... She teaches and they use them for everything from computer keyboards to gym stuff.... they clean like crazy. I have used Tilex in the past , but this seems hard on the vinyl and seems to make it stiff and brittle. Pus it a little tough to work with the fumes and such.... I can't wait to try the erasers this year. I have my usual mold spots form winter storage.... They sell the large sized ones in a value pack at Sam's Club...

Congratulations! Those seats look great! But you will really need to recondition that vinyl as soon as possible! I would suggest 303 for them, great UV protection and softeners, don't even think of anything else, and reapply monthy. Great stuff.

Well, just finished cleaning up the boat. I used the Wally Mart black streak remover and the large sized white erasers.... Holy cow did that ever clean the seats... wow, they look great.... That black streak stuff also worked pretty well on the scummy line you get along the water line on the sides....

I know that you already cleaned it, but I'm a big fan of Simple Green.

In have vented poles for my cover. Definitely keeps airflow going and reduces mold/mildew, but some pops up here 'n' there. Without airflow, it can get really bad in some boats (as you know).

Next time try Tuff Stuff before you use the eraser. It's a lot easier on the vinyl and threads than chlorine-based products. I've used it for years on the vinyl, carpets, upholstery, and cover.

FWIW, I'm a water, fire, and mold damage/remediation specialist and just wanted to say to be careful of any sodium hypochloride containing products. Yes, at first they seem to work but they are very caustic and dry out many materials. If you use them, do not allow them to dry in the sun and as mentioned above, after rinsing, apply a reputable "reconditioning" agent.
The "lime green container" at home depot mentioned above is from a company called "Armor Guard/Mold Guard" and the product comes as either "deck wash" or "house wash". Its a good cleaning product for its intended targets but in truth, it's simply bleach with a surfactant added to it. (bleach evaporates very quickly, so a surfactant (soap) is added to reduce the surface tension and extend the evaporation time)

although others may have had success with this type of product, I wouldn't recommend using it on any marine upholstery. If your hard set on using an "oxidizing/bleaching" product, then try a stabilized sodium per carbonate (baking soda) based product. Oxy clean, etc...
Even then, be very carefull..
Oh, and bleach may kill some of the mold, but it does not kill the majority of it and does not in any way shape or form "denature" the mold spores that cause reproduction and worse, the production of "mycotoxins"..
Bleach as a disinfectant is rendered almost useless when it's applied to a dirty surface without first doing a thorough cleaning and rinsing because "organic based" substances basically neutralize the disinfecting properties of bleach.

Best advice is as mentioned by others, allow air flow/ventilation and keep the areas as dry as possible.
