Evening guys....

1989 4.3L Mercruiser with Alpha One

In the electrical forum, PondTunes has been a fantastic help in chasing an electrical problem, and I feel he has nailed it with a faulty voltage regulator. Is this built into the alternator? If so, is there testing that can be done with a multimeter before pulling it and bringing it into a shop, as I assume the regulator can be rebuilt? Or will the alternator need to be fully replaced?

Re: Internal Voltage Regulator??

The fastest and easiest test is to pull te alternator and get it tested. Being an 89, who knows if it's original or not. Of course if you had the OEM service manual you would know for sure if you had original or not.

Here's a link to the OEM manual.

Note: it's 568 MB in size...... Huge file. But free.

Tks Don, you are right on top of things as usual ;)

It is funny hearing someone else advise me to get an OEM service manual, as I have probably myself given that advice about 1000 times in the Jonny/Rude forum. I have ordered it of course and is on the way.

So I assume the regulator is built in the alternator correct? And not the stand alone type?

Tks again, so helpful as always.

Yes, only the very old alternators had stand alone regulators,
BTW, that link I posted is free and is identical in evey way to the OEM paper manual.
