Came across a 1979 Tahiti Emperor, 350 Merc mag, with a fresh water cooling system; 25' day cruiser; I know next to nothing about boats and am looking at buying my first one since dad's 1959 15 1/2' Reinell. Is the self contained cooling system an additional headache for maintenance and therefore additional bucks in the future; or is it not a real big deal?

thanks for your assistance in advance

shane

Re: internal fresh water cooling system

Fatalbert
I would say it is good for your Motor and really good for your motor if you run in salt water. Like any product can add extra maintenance. Main thing I would want with the system is a low water warning system and a engine temp alarm and temp guage.
As I see it and have never had a Closed fresh water system but only disadvantage is if you have a engine water leak can run out of coolent. So as long as have a way to check for low water a big plus. With the raw water system if have a slow leak outdrive keep pumping in water so no problem. If it a bad leak may fill the boat with water though. Engine runs hotter so could affect Exhaust manifolds ad cause more saltwater problems there. Full system also protects the exhaust manifold but not the riser.

Advantages are many. 1: Engine does not get saltWater in it so should not rust away. 2: Do not have 40 or 50 degree water coming into a hot engine. 3: Engine run warmer which is good and do not need to worry about salt deposites. 4: Engine water pump lubbed by coolent just like a car. 5: Can run a cabin heater if you want. 6: Engine protected from cold weather, and manifold if full system.
