Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum / boating and need your help. I searched the forum and can't find anything similar to my problem. I just bought a 1975 9.8HP outboard motor to server as a kicker for my 18' boat. At first when I ran the motor in a trash can I get a stream of water out of the pee hole, but when I rev the motor up the stream stop and I only get exhaust / air out of the pee hole. In order to get water out of the pee hole again I have to shut off the motor and restart it at idle speed. Is this common or should I be getting water out at every RPM? Or maybe the motor have to be moving in the water to get enough water into the inlet hole? Also I can't seem to find where the water suppose to enter the water pump (inlet hole) of the motor. Please advise. Do I have to change the impeller or is this a common thing where the water is not entering the motor since it is in a test tank? Thank you ahead.

In some cases a engine will start to suck exhaust in a small container it's either that or your impeller is bad

Same thing happens on my Merc even when running in a large bin. As Laddies says, when you rev, exhaust gas bubbles up around water intake and gets sucked in instead of water.

NOt sure where the water intake is on your engine but if it's on the side, the ear muffs which you connect up to a garden hose would be an alternative solution although they can sometimes mask a weak impeller as you are forcing water into the system

Impeller should be changed regularly (irrespective of whether engine is used or not as the rubber deteriorates) so it's probably worth checking the condition of it anyway (get yourself a good workshop manual which will describe the removal process which can be a bit convoluted)

Re: Intermittent Tell Tail Water from my 9.8hp

I sprayed water into the pee hole and I noticed that some water come out from the hole on top of the prop and lot of water out from inside the prop. Should there be water coming out from the inside of the prop.?

As for the intake, I didn't see any hole on the side of the lower unit. The only hole I see is about 1" wide in diameter right above the prop. and it is cover with a screen mask. Could this be the intake?

This is different from my main motor (Force Outboard 90HP) which has intakes on the side and the exhaust hole above the prop. Could the exhaust for my 9.8 be at the prop and someohow water is getting into the exhaust?

Also can anyone recommend a good service maual?
Thank you.

Its possible you might have a restriction in your cooling system, blow compressed air back through the water outlet tube.Do this a couple of times, there are several areas that restrictions can take place,if you havent replaced the impeller recently I suggest doing so,I have done hundreds of these 9.8&7.5s

Hi Terry, to change the impeller do I just remove the two nuts, one above the prop and one in front? Do I have to do anything with the shift rod?

Also any idea where the water intake could be?

The water intake is at the cover that the nut above the prop holds on, remove the 2 nuts and drop the lower unit, if there are broken imp blades try to recover them as they can plug water passages the shift shaft has a blind spline to keep it properly lined up
