intermittent power loss in johnson 88

My brother and I recently purchased a boat with a '92 Johnson 88 with very low hours. We have been experiencing an intermittent problem with loss of power after the boat has been operated for 30 minutes to an hour. The problem most often occurs after running for a period at slow speed and then trying to get back on plane (such as when exiting a no-wake zone). The engine speed is noticeably reduced (don't have a tach) and the boat will only run at about 15 mph.

Usually, other than the low RPM, the engine runs smoothly, but the last time out there was a definite miss when pushed to full throttle. We have consulted a mechanic, but when he tested it it ran fine and he has no ideas about what could cause the intermittent condition. After reading many of the posts here I'm wondering if it could be a power pack that is heat sensitive. The problem goes away when the engine is allowed to cool, so it sure seems heat related. Any ideas?

If could very well be a powerpack. Try heating the p/p up with a hair drier while you run the engine on the hose and see it you can duplicate the problem. If so, replace the p/p.

c/6

Hooty
