I have an ‘89’ 135hp mercruiser that is experiencing an intermittent clicking when I try to start the engine. The engine starts fine for about 5 starts then on the sixth it just clicks. When I jump it across the solenoid it just clicks. I have two batteries. One is brand new and the other is fully charged. When it starts it cranks over without hesitation and starts right up. I have tried cleaning up the connections and I even replaced the solenoid but, I get the same thing. Could this be the starter or a short somewhere???

You could have green corrosion creeping through the battery cables. Was the crap that you cleaned off the terminals green?? Starter could be on its way.Make sure you are getting enough volts to the starter. The "fully charged" battery may be bad.Charlie

Could also be the slave solenoid or starter solenoid.
