Intermittant stalling

I have a '75 Merc 650 (65hp) with CD ignition with distributor. Lately it will occasionally quit while I am running and will not restart. This usually happens after 10 minutes or so. After several minutes it will start ok and run the rest of the day. This doesn't happen regularly. Today I backed it off the trailer and pulled into a slip, shut it off and went and parked the trailer. When I got back the motor would not hit at all. I tried opening the throttle, choking, etc. After a few minutes it started up and ran the rest of the day. I have had it to a mechanic who worked on the fuel pump. Of course the problem won't appear when I want it to. I think the problem is electrical.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I am new to this forum and would appreciate any advice. And thanks.

Chap

Re: Intermittant stalling

Past experence for me says it is the ing block. Low tech test is when it stops working
on the lake take some ice water out of the cooler and pour over the block to cool it down If motor restarts then it is bad. These blocks get a open circut in them when they get hot and won't restart until it cools off.
Things to do before you go to the lake.
check to see that you don't have corroaded wire connectors on the block and coil, or a broken wire on the trigger. A good battery, with not less than 9.5-10 volts when cranking the motor over.(take the plug wires off 1st) Clean the battery terminals. You should have the same voltage at the red wire on the ing block as the battery has also.
...have fun...corm

I'm moving this up so someone might tell me what a ing module is. Is this what the mechanic called a "power pack"?

Thanks, Chap

Re: Intermittant stalling

Reading what Corm has posted seems like he was abbreviating "Ignition Block/Module"... "ing block" but who knows... he was saying to cool down module... so I would assume this is what he is talking about & got a "TYPO"... would luv to have a speel checker on this board... seen it on other boards & boy is it sweet!!!

Yes... that would be what your mechanic called "Power Pack" but I have found people call things on how they see 'em. Ex.: Freon is called "Freezone"... what in the H___ are you talking about!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Well at least someone answered... Have a great day.

------------------
"Keep it between the Bouys & Good Luck"

fone_man
