I gave it the throttle to head out across the lake in my 1978 Checkmate 460, but instead of the usual thrill of torque, the boat was dogging and could barely move out of it's own way...after 5 minutes of persuasion and cusing it was finaly able to get up to speed. Why would this happan?<br />Sand?heat?pressure lose? Please help.

Hollis, there are lots of variables that can cause your problem. My check list on troubleshooting the problem is. Gas-how old is it? Fuel Filter- is it clogged? Ignition- Wires good? Spark Plugs good? (even just check to make sure your wires are on good and tight on the distributor and plugs. Electronic ignition either works or it doesn't work. Points ignition, a weak capacitor or dirty points can cause such a problem. If it was mechanical inside your engine, it would be consistant all the time. So I feel you have a fuel or ignition problem. SS

I forgot to mention a kinked or pinched fuel line can cause havoc also....SS

I agree with all the above things to check....I would add one item to the list. Check your choke. If the choke is sticking it will give the same problems. Check the choke linkage for binding. Now that we have basically told you to check it all.... just take it one step at a time. Cusing does help keep your blood pressure
