Interesting Escort Trailer Info

I have a 20' escort trailer circa 1991. As many know, this trailer had a info. sticker that the numbers would wear off and then you are stuck with a trailer that can't be registered.

So I call Bayliner...and found out this little factoid.

In the late 80's and early 90's Escort/Bayliner got in the practice of creating a duplicate VIN plate and stuffing it inside one of the back tubes of the trailer.

The guy recommended that I pull off the lights on the end and take a look inside the tube and there should be a plate in there.

I will be checking this out as soon as I get home tonight, and am hoping that it is #1 where he said it would be and #2 that it's stamped and not printed or at least legible.

I hope this may shed some light on those with this trailer and no documentation and have spent way too much time looking all around the frame for a number stamped directly into it.

That issue is a common problem with a lot of trailer manufacturers.

Not sure what State you?re in but in Maryland all you need is the title and they will issue you a new State issued Vin plate to replace the one worn off the trailer.

Unfortunately I am in Massachusetts...that's not an option.

I need a title, or certificate of origin and a copy of the last registration. So if I can't track any of that down looks like I will try to go for the good ol' home made status....which may r may not happen.

Still waiting to get home and check and see if that VIN tag is inside the frame...

Well, what a timely post for me! I'll have to check this out. The trailer had the original lights when I bought it, so I may be in luck. Thanks for the info!

No Problem...

I bent the light back on the left side (as you are standing at the back of the trailer looking forward). There is a plate in there but It had some corrosion. I didn't have time to scuff of the crud to see if it has numbers stamped, but it's there alright.

Good luck
