I have a 1982 15hp evinrude pull start.
Also have a 1973 i believe Johnson 15hp. The motors look exactly the same, I’ve interchanged other parts on them

Will the stator and coils from the Johnson work on the evinrude?

The evinrude has a powerpack and then wires going to coil packs whereas the Johnson just has the coil packs that bolt up.

The stators look different but if I swapped the coils and all over do you guys think it would work? Could i cause any damage by trying it given it all bolts up correctly?

If your johnson 15 hp is a 74-76 it has a points magneto. Not worth the swap.

The magneto on your 82 model is ultra reliable.----Electronic.-----No point in going to the breaker point ignition used on the the 74 / 75 / 76 models.----You would also have to swap flywheel I think.

Sounds good. I think the original took a crap as I’m getting no spark and no ohm reading out of it , will replace it with oe style then

Stop.----What ohm reading do you get on the sensor coil ?-----What ohm reading on the ignition charge coil.-------Usually it is the CDI / powerpack that fails.

My ohmeter got no reading from either coil. The coil packs themselves were in spec and killswitch was good. I don’t remember what i got from powerpack or if i tested once i didn’t have any ohms from the stator itself. It was just running last week and I took the powerhead out to replace telltale and thermostat and whatnot. Once it went back together there was no spark. All grounds have been triple checked.

You cannot ohm test a power pack. You need to do a DVA test.
I don’t think i tested the powerpack at all once i didn’t get any reading off the stator. I’m going to go back tomorrow to work on it and bring the manual with me and double check all my tests and grounds. Will see what happens

The wires connecting the power pack to the sensor under the flywheel often break internally due to the flexing back and forth every time you move the throttle. They still look fine at a glance. Wiggle them back and forth while doing a continuity test on them.

So after testing everything over and over and not being able to get a reading from stator, I replaced it and fired right up.
