OK, I'm a newbie, and I'm sure you guys have answered this before, but I can't seem to find a posting on point.

I've got a 1974 (?) Merc 85 hp (serial 3866121) and I think I need a new lower unit. What, if any, other years and horsepowers will work (so I can keep an eye on ebay, unless anyone's got a used one for sale).

Thanks!!

Hi Chris
What makes you think you need a new lower unit? Did you back over yours? Hit smoething? As long as it is already broke, why not fix the one you have?

Re: Interchange Merc 85 lower?

Great question.

All I know about outboards is that I used to curse the heck out of them while sailing. Now look at me.

Anyway, it appears that the former owner ran it into something. The skeg and all is pretty ok, but the prop, with attached casting (and presumably a shaft inside) has pulled out of the lower unit casting. It looks as if it is supposed to be held in by a threaded fitting. The part of the lower unit casting that contains the female threads is mostly broken off and missing - i'd say there is about 20% left, in two separate chunks (15% and 5% of the circumference, pieces about 150 degrees apart). Is this somehow repairable? The prior owner didn't remember what had happened - course a large cloud of funny smelling smoke followed him out of the house when I went to pick it up!

Thanks for the help!

And, since people are so helpful here, what would you do to a motor that hasn't been run in fifteen years before you tried cranking it? (it is not seized and we live in a very (!) dry climate).
