I insure my boat with Allstate because my car and house policies are also with them. You get a discount for multiple policies. I've only had one claim and the service was good. You may want to check with several companies and compare rates. The lowest rate possible isn't so appealing with a company that hassles you on claims, though. Six month coverage- I don't know.

Not sure if this will help, but BoatUS lets you pay in installments. I suppose you could just pay a few then just not pay the premium and let the coverage lapse...

Just a thought.

my policy through allstate is only 8.50 month at this rate i cannot affore to be without even if boat is parked for the winter, one windstorm and a tree drops across her... vs 8.50 why only six months. guess if i wanted i could only do boating season but why?

When I asked my agent if I could get lower a lower rate considering that I use the boat only May - August, they told me the rates were already figured at a reduced rate for our part of hte country.

i am sure you can insure for part of the year, but i think it depends on boat type. i just know that performance boaters (go-fast crowd) always insure for a higher premium when the boat is in the water. for non-performance boats, you probably have to suck up the same full price for the year. they probably just cut them a break because they kill them with prices anyway.

My insurance agent stated that rates are determined by time boats sit in the driveway as well as on the water.

Why would you not want to insure your boat for a full year?

There are plenty of bad things that can happen on dry land.

Marty

I thought that I would save a few bucks and only had a 6 month policy on hand. I would start at end April thru Oct. My house caught fire on 04/01/02. The repairs for my Stratos will be in the neighborhood of 5K$. Trust me, go the distance on the coverage and make sure that it is more than you need. I wish I had. I still am unsure about repairing the rig. I may just get another boat and trailer and take my motor off and use it as it was undamaged. :(

digital dave- most are missing the point here. you should insure for 12 months, but you can find a company that will set the premium based on 6 months in the water and 6 months on land. for most of us, it doesn't work and is not necessary- we pay the same regardless of where our boat is. but those with performance boats (go-fasts), it saves them a lot of money because the insurance companies kill them during the months their rockets are in the water. if you are part of this crowd, go for it. if you have a normal boat like the rest of us, shop around for the best 12 month policy and bite the bullet. i use usaa and pay a whopping $98 a year for full replacement coverage. but you have to have military affiliation to be a member. good luck-

Re: Insure for 6months only?

I only use mine June - Oct., its garaged the rest of the time at my home. Because my homeowner's insurance will cover it if anything happens to it while in the garage, I don't feel the need pay for double coverage year over year.

I simply get insurance for 12 mos every May/June and cancel the policy in Oct, and have the refund mailed to me. This advice came directly from my insurance agent, and has worked well with my boat, and my Corvair.

dorelse...do you know what amounts your contents are covered for or do you have it listed as an specific item on you homeowners. this is a minefieled and all policys are diffrent however be absolutly sure of what you got and do not assume your agent is knowledgeable in what they tell you.

i had to travel crosscountry to get my boat and my agent told me the trailer would be covered by tow vehicle automatically and i went merrily on my way upon returning home i discovered it was covered for a whopping 1000 dollers and i pulled this over 2000 miles thank god nothing happened heck a blowout could have done more damage than this. double check and then read the policy to verify

boat insurance is cheap... just pay the 12 month policy and quit trying to save yourself $125.

Peace of mind is worth it.
