Insurance companies. Any horror stories?

I've been a customer of State Farm for about 20 years now. I've never had a problem with them. In the couple of accidents that I've had in that time, they have paid the claim without issue. They insure my house and boat too. I'm constantly receiving adds claiming that I can save big $ if I change to another no-name comapny, but I won't do it.

Now, my sister-in-law has become a Farmer's agent. She is under pressure to make her quota, and she's working day & night to do it. I'd like to give her my business, but I'm a little leary of changing after 20 years.

I'm wondering what kind of track records you've seen with your insurance companies.

I have Kentucky Farm Burea and have always had good luck with them.

I have my house, personal vehichles, and business vehicles with them and never had a problem.

I too have seen these claims to saving big bucks by switching, but why fix something that ain't broke.

With that said, I do have the motorhome insured by Progressive. They offered the best rate for full coverage on it and a lot of regular insurance companies will not insure them.

We have had Farmers on the vehicles for about 10 yrs. The only problem I had with them was after TS Frances. Every vehicle on our street got flooded with about 1 1/2 foot of saltwater. All the cars except ours and 1 neighbor's were totaled. The neighbor & I had Farmers. They took care of replacing the jute & cleaning the carpet and claimed there would be no other damage. My thinking was that once saltwater gets inside door panels they will rust from the inside out. Also the car, Toyota Avalon, had a computer under the front seat. I figure that saltwater and a computer with the attached wiring harness would just lead to problems down the road. Farmers would not guarentee that we would have no future problems so we traded it in.

Joe, I like my Ins. co. No complaints, and for someone in Jersey that's saying something. Although I do have a selective type co. You have to be a member of a bus. org or a State employee, or previously ins. by them. I was under my dads policy when I was a kid and was able to get my own. I get a $300 +/- check for car ins, plus a discount because they insure my house, and I get a $50 rebate check from the homeowners policy.

I pay ( are you sitting down)$1,600 yr full coverage 1996 s-10 and 1995 ford escort, $500,000 liability and $50 deductible for collision & comp. My homeowners policy is $250 yr $500,000 liability, 250 deductible.

Now I have heard of Allstate dropping you at renewal if you make a claim. (source is a friend that it has happened to.) And State farm is pulling from NJ. Although I have never heard of anything bad about SF. Would never go to Continental ins.

Becareful I have heard of co's promising the moon then the next year there go your rates. And to try to return with the same status is difficult also. Apparently, if you leave and come back you get treated as a new insurie(sp?) rather then your old reliable self.

Just my $.02 and what I have heard happen in Jersey.

Insurance is legalized gambling. You are betting against yourself. You are betting that you will have a claim you will not be able to financially sustain yourself…if you could, you wouldn’t need the insurance. If you thought you would never have the claim, you wouldn’t make the bet. Like all casino’s the ‘house’ has the odds stacked in its favor. The insurance company will make a profit, regardless of claims, barring an unusual catastrophic event like terrorists.

Insurance is a contract. You are entitled to nothing more than what is in your contract. Expect nothing more. And like the casinos, they are in business to separate you from as much of your $$$ as they can while returning as little as possible back to you. Read the contract and shop. Your relationship with your insurance agent is nothing more than a ‘good business’ sense on his/her part. You are literally paying them to be your friend.

Insurances and banks are the two consumer choices that are most often overlooked and the consumer can usually benefit from shopping around and changing both.

http://clarkhoward.com/

I vote for state farm, you get a personal agent who personalizes your needs. Im in nj, no state farm is not leaving town, the threat worked ,they got the reforms they needed. been with them for 36yrs, and dad was 20 years befor that. same agent. a simple phone call and my needs are done.
jg, you can save some big bucks if you push your deductibles up to 100 on comp, and 500 collison and homeowner, if you got an umbrella policy you can reduce the 500k liability to the min. and your probly paying more for collision than those trucks are worth, might assume the risk that if your in a accident it will be the other guys fault and you will be paid for the vehical anyway.

HOW ARE INSURANCE COMPANIES AND REALATORS ALIKE?
They both hire new prospects on the premise of them drawing family, close friends and thier own busseness to the lead Agent. the newbie draws his commission until he runs out and the residual commisions default to the lead Agent. works particulary well in the life market with new college hires. the finacial services industry does it too.

JG, I hope you're not bragging about those rates. I have same policy with $0 deductable comp and have a 2003 Exploder, a 2004 Jeep, a 2003 32'RV, and a boat and homeowners and pay $1100 a year for all. GEICO.

-Roger
