I have a 1986 350 mercruiser engine. I would like to relocate the oil filter cause it's a pan in the butt to change in it's current location. The mercruiser version is around 200 bucks. I've seen kits on summit racing for small block chevy's going for around 60 bucks. Is an auto kit ok to install?

I've replaced a lot of cheap kits. The housings are just cheap pot metal and crack, the hoses are also cheap low pressure hose held on with cheap hose clamps. They work fine on cars and trucks where you can pull over to the side of the road when they fail. The Merc kits have hoses with crimped flare fittings, oring connections on the Aluminum housing that replaces the block filter. you also get brakets for the filter to mount it on the manifolds. The OEM kits are just way better for boats than the automotive stuff.

Sure it is OK to install.
But don't expect it to last as long as a marine product.

As Don said, there are good reasons that all the instructions for the automotive remote oil filter kits say "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR MARINE OR DIESEL APPLICATIONS".

Your motor, your choice! ;)

I have used the summit kit but had my hoses made. Buy the marine version. Good hoses are expensive to make, I would have saved money by using marine on my v/8 ranger project

So you guys are saying the cast adapter/seals fail or is the problem with the hoses? I've bought the adapter from Napa (cheap) in the past and used Airequip lines that I made up (expensive). Done it for years. Never a failure.

Yes. The cast adapters are not marine grade aluminum, nor are painted, and turn into a fuzzy ball of corrosion in short order, plus the screw on type never seem to stay tight, and the hoses are horrible. Proshadetree: I did use marine on my V-8 Ranger, I used the remote adapter from a 351 King Cobra OMC, fit sweet, and a nice piece all around.

Mercruser uses a much heavier hose in there kits.Just change the filter if you don't have the 200 bucks.
