Anyone out there know how the rubber motor mounts get installed on a Nissan 25? The rubber gave out in the old mounts. I had to use a cutoff wheel to cut all the bolts and a chisel to get the old mount cans out so I didn't get to see much.

The parts that go into the holes in the midsection besides are a damper washer, lock plate, and the rubber mount, in that order. The bolt goes thru the middle of these. It seems that the only thing holding the mounts in the holes is a single tab each that fits on the outside and holds the mount in there. Is that correct?

Thanks,
Ed.

The other side of the mount has a nut that goes on the end of the bolt.

Thanks Elvin. Is it true that the only thing securing the mount (into the midsection) is the tab? Or are the mounts originally pressed in? If they are pressed in originally then I probably need to shim the holes since I can now fit them in by hand.

Ed.

I'm confused about what your saying. The mounts are through bolted...so nothing is pressed or held in by a keeper. There is a keeper on the nut side that flips up to act as a lockwasher. There is also a square rubber damper that is held in place by the shock mount holder against the motorleg.

Re: Installing Nissan 25 Motor Mounts

OK. It's a Nissan 25HP (25C2). There's no square anything regarding the motor mounts. Maybe you've never had one apart. They are all round. There are 4 rubber mounts that fit into 4 holes in the exhaust housing. If you look at the parts catalog each of these 4 rubber mounts has a "lock plate" and a "damper plate" that precedes it into the hole in the exhaust housing. The new ones just slip right in and out of the holes and it seems there is nothing to hold them in ther except for the keeper tabs. After removing the old rubber mounts and cleaning the holes in the exhaust housing I can slip the new mounts and associated hardware into the holes with little effort. Therefore the only means of keeping the mount in the hole would be the tabs screwed to the exhaust housing over the edge of the mounts (one tab per mount). This doesn't seem like a very strong arrangement to me. However if the mounts were originally pressed into the exhaust housing maybe it would be. On the other hand maybe a 25HP outboard doesn't need anything stonger. I don't know and am seeking guidance on this. If the factory service manual had any info on the subject I would buy it. I don't get to see it before I buy it online (non-refundable purchase) and my local dealers are jerks and probably have neer replace a motor mount on one these anyway. I am not going to take a $30 chance that service manual actually does have the info I'm looking for. Thanks anyway. I'll figure it out. Cheers.

Re: Installing Nissan 25 Motor Mounts

I do not know how to be more clear about this. All four of the round mounts are through bolted. If you look at the mount bracket(the bottom two mounts) you will see the square rubber damper. Go back and look at the parts book. A 1/4 of an inch from the mount bracket, on the left and below, you will see that the nut holds the bolt that goes through the mount. The upper two mounts are through bolted into the steering shaft assy. There are nuts that go on them as well that you can see. It's pretty obvious that if the bolt that goes through the round mount has threads on it that it must thread into something.....right. That something is a N U T.

Motor Mount Pictures

Here are some pictures. My question is: Are the tabs shown the only thing holding the rubber mounts in the exhaust housing?

Yes, that's it. Your casting look a little worse for wear, but they should be fine. The mounts are not pressed in and if not for corrosion would slide in and out( except for the lock plates)

:) I'm going for the retro look.

( except for the lock plates)
Are the lock plates supposed to "lock" into the holes? The new ones slip right in all the way down to the shoulder at the bottom of the hole.

No, they are more of a spacer than an actual retainer.

Thanks, man. It's great to be able to bounce these questions. Appreciate your time. It looks like the lock plate then, is there to prevent you from stretching the rubber mount too far during assembly. The damper plate will bottom out after about an eight inch on the lock plate when you tighen down the nut.

See bottom of page

I've added a picture of the finished product. Again, thanks for the help.

Ed.
