Installing new VHF Marine Radio

In the installation directions, it states that there should be at least 3 feet between the transceiver and the antenna. What happens if the distance between the transceiver and antenna is about 18 inches, which is the approximate distance between the old VHF radio and the existing antenna. It seems to work fine with the old VHF radio with the exception of some static. My old radio is a Apelco, model, VHF 5160A. I have no idea how old it is, but it still works, but doesn't have all the features the new radio has. I figured it was time for an upgrade. Any information on problems I might see with the distance between the transceiver and the antenna would be great.

My radio and antenna are only 15" apart and my previous boat was only 18" apart and they all work without issue...

Thanks for your response. Since my original radio seemed to work good, I figured the new one would probably be fine. I just didn't know if due to other added features in the new radio compared to the old radio if this distance was critical or not.

You'll be fine, just try to mount the antenna as high as possible.

On my radios the antenna base was always above the radio, don't know if that means anything or not !!
