Would first need to know what windlass model?

There are several types. If it uses 8 plat then the rode needs to be soaked in water for 24 hours before install

Most require end of rode to be attached inside locker, then use windlass to feed rode in

The soak in water is just what the manufacture recommends for the 8 plat rode, think to make it lay better. If your using 3 strand then its not required that I know of

I had a maxwell 500 on my formula with all chain, was a great windlass

The Maxwell manual says after attaching rode in locker, to feed it in thru the hole of windlass page 25

I know just a little about windlasses. The ones I have seen do not allow shackles between the chain and rode. They use a chain/rope splice. It does not have the same chafe resistance as the line thimble and shackle. I would recommend you check it often and if so, monitor it for chafe.

e.g. I had my speedboat in the water during a storm. The storm lasted at least 24 hours. I had a galvanized trailer type steel hook on the stainless steel bow eye. At the end of the storm, the eye hook was worn thru to a sliver, which broke off when I changed it. Chafe is a real issue. Use oversize lines and lots of them, when a storm approaches.
