Looking for mechanic's opinion concerning grease on a new impeller's vanes, to prevent damage on initial startup.

Re: installing new impellers

I have heard of the grease on the vanes to lube it at initial start-up and to make it slide into the impeller cup easier. I used a small amount of dish soap and it worked out very well. Just what worked for me! Plus, no chance of damage to rubber impeller from the grease.

As Rick said...and another reason is insurance for the Tech and the customer who goes home and fires his engine up in the alley or driveway.

TMD

Just finished mine. Used a dab of Vasoline jelly worked great. Be careful of the key on the shaft when sliding the pump housing on.

Pee system, a small nozzle that sprays water, hooked up to the waterline of an outboard, so you can monitor the cooling water flow. If it is peeing water, then water is flowing thru the engine. If it stops peeing, then waterpump has failed, or a blockage has stopped up the water flow, and the engine is likely to overheat very soon.

I am not paying 10 dollars so I can see my engine pee. I will wait for the buzzer to go off.
Besides I am going to add a temp guage.

Re: installing new impellers

I like to see the stream of water coming out the back when I start up. Waiting for a buzzer to go off is not my idea of checking water flow and I do have a temp gauge, also. But a temp gauge will not tell you a thing when you first start out. Your impeller could be disintegrated by the time it gets up to temp if there is no water flow at start-up! A water pressure gauge is a different story. It WILL tell you if the pump is working right away, I always look over the back to make sure it's putting out water when I first set out for the day. Peace of mind and habit I guess! :) I don't believe there is a "Kit". It's something you can plumb in yourself. Could be wrong on that, but I sure don't know where to get one, unless the dealer has it. It's really called a "Water Outlet Telltale Feature" if you call about one. I don't even know if it's possible on your motor!

Ok water pressure guage. What I really need is a tach and will get that in before anything else. I will have flushed the cooling system replaced both the thermostat (stainless steel) and water impeller before I wake the engine up next year after I have replaced! the boat. Not really just do what Bayliner should have done.
