Installing lower unit

Did not properly remove lower unit Without being in forward Gear, upon reinstalling . stuck in forward year with no neutral no reverse difficulty in finding the proper install mode help. 1970 mercruiser 120.

To assemble, manually shift everything into forward gear, 'n put it back together,.....
I wrap a bungee strap 'round the prop shaft, up to the cav-pate on each side, so I can twist the shaft, to Lock it into gear, as otherwise, josslin' the drive on, it slips into neutral,....
