Motor in signature. The manual says that there is a special tool for installing the forward coil in the gearcase. I can't find it for sell anywhere, so I'll try to use something else to drive the coil into place. Has anybody else ever used something other than the OMC tool for doing that?

Heating the forward end of the skeg with a hand held propane torch will expand the aluminum enough to allow the coil to drop into place. A piece of wood and a hammer will seat it.

Also...... There should be a slew of dealerships that have that tool, gathering dust for years, who would be delighted to sell and get rid of it..... I sold mine.

Heat worked well. However, I don't have much experience with a torch and I didn't want to distort the aluminum. Therefore, I put the torpedo into a pot of boiling water and let it heat up gently. It was enough to allow the coil to drop into place.

I didn't have a piece of wood that was a good size, so I looked around a bit for something that might work. I found that the upper motor mount is exactly the right size. It even has a round metal plate on one side that fits the circumference of the coil perfectly. A sharp whack or two and the coil is now resting comfortably in its new home. Thanks for the advice Joe.

Good for you my friend. The mention of a torch caused you to think of hot water I assume.... good thinking, that didn't cross my mind. The motor mount trick is also great.

For future reference, the hand held propane torches will not distort the aluminum. At least it never has for me...... and I've held that type torch on various portions of the aluminum (outboards) using a blow torch type tip.

An acetylene torch on the other hand will destroy the aluminum in a matter of seconds. One should never ever use this type torch unless one is determined to destroy the item.
