I have 1999 counter rotating 4.3L raw water cooled mercruisers on my 1990 Doral 300. I am replacing the water circ pump on one engine and was wondering about the procedure once the pump is installed. Obviously the water has drained out of the pump and some of the block. Do I need to open the top of the pump and fill the block and prime the pump before I start the engine? Or will it not hurt it to run dry for the few seconds it takes to fill with water? The manuel doesnt say anything about priming anything....dont want to screw up my new pump!!

Re: installing circ pump procedure

As long as we are talking about the circulating pump on the front of the engine with the metal impeller and not the raw water pump with the rubber impeller, there is nothing you need to do.

Usually what maint. you do to one, the other is not far behind.
