Buy the Tach and the adapter cable. Mount and Wire up the tach, plug it into the remote control plug and go. Or is it a tiller??

If it's a 3 prong plug with a flat spot in it about 1/2" in diameter, then yes it is. Otherwise, you would hook the sending wire from the tach into the gray wire on the motor and put 12 Volts for the backlight and of course, ground.

Teleflex

web page

EVINRUDE, JOHNSON OUTBOARDS, OMC SEADRIVE
AND JET ENGINES
Check Dash end of engine wiring harness for a Gray or Gray/
Yellow wire (may be inside Control Box). If present, make sure
engine end is connected to alternator at terminal strip on powerhead,
not to Ignition system. Connect end nearest to dash to
'SEND' (Sender) terminal of tachometer.
If Gray or Gray/Yellow wire is not present in harness, locate Gray
or Gray/Yellow wire on terminal strip on engine powerhead.
Connect a wire from 'SEND' (Sender) Terminal on tachometer to
Gray or Gray/Yellow wire on terminal strip. Set Selector Switch on
tachometer as shown in Application Chart (6 POLE)
