Installing a tach

I want to install a tach on my little 25hp Mercury. It has remote controls installed.

I've looked at the wiring diagrams that come with the teleflex tachs. They look more complicated than necessary. Can someone offer to simplify the typical installation for me?

Also, my RC has a "D" shaped plug mounted in the front that has 4 male pins in it. What's this for? Could it be for connecting instruments?... Like a TACH???

Re: Installing a tach

Thanks MM. The wiring diags & color charts are a big help. But, I am still curious about the teleflex line of tachs. Will they work easily with my little merc? I believe its a 82 model. Serial 6015565.

I'm not begging... YET. I know the guys are out there with some ideas.

Is the Teleflex line a good one? Is there a better brand?

Re: Installing a tach

Most tachometers are interchangable, there should be a switch on the tach itself to set for number of cylinders or poles on ignition system, To connect tach is normally tach lead, ignition lead and ground. I would suggest to go to teleflex site and see if the model you have is compatible with your outboard.
