Help! I have a 82 Johnson 115hp outboard that I had to install a new remote control box for shifting on last night. I am new to this but was able to install all the cables. However, when I started the engine it was revved up very high and wouldn't do anything when put in reverse. I adjusted the cables and got the idle down, but I still can't get it to move when in reverse. Now, when I put it in gear it goes forward, I put it in reverse it does nothing then when I put it back to neutral it jumps forward. What am I not doing? Yes, I am a woman, but I'm single and I have to be able to do this so please, help. I want to go fishing this weekend! :)

Howdy mslequet

Which control did you get? Is it an OMC control or a generic one? Side mount or Binnacle?

Re: installing a new remote control shifter box

Well, the first place I would start is at the motor. Remove both cables at the motor where they connect. Then with a friend at the remote control, have them shift into forward, neutral and reverse. See if the shift cable is moving the way it's supposed to. Do the same while watching the throttle cable. When you install the cables to there respective control arms on the motor, have the motor and control lever in neutral. Then adjust the trunnion adjusting nut so that they just slip onto the control arm. Let us know how that goes. Others will have more input....

Actually the new control should have come with decent instructions.

But remove the cables from the motor.Decide which cable mount position (at the motor) is the shift, and which is the throttle.Move the shift linkage to neutral, and the control to neutral. Now move the control towards forward,to see which cable moves first. This is the shift cable. With the motor AND the control in neutral conect this cable.Adjusting the barrel as needed.

Hey,you're half way there.

Next, with the control in neutral, look at the motor linkage. You'll have to push the linkage against the idle screw and connect the cable. Now move the control to forward (you may have to manually turn the prop shaft to ease the operation) then go back to neutral. If the linkage is not hitting the idle screw, adjust the cable so it does.Do the same in reverse.

This is a long post, but should get you into the ballpark.

DHP

Re: installing a new remote control shifter box

After attaching the shift cable, while in neutral, I attempted to move the control forward and it will not move forward at all. My boat was still in the water because that's where the reverse gave out on me. Yesterday, I got frustrated and knew that it was going to rain today and I had to get the boat out of the water. I attached the cables and when I did, I found when I put it in neutral to start it, it went forward, so I moved the control back and it went into neutral. I manually turned the boat around so I could take it to the boat ramp and pull it out of the water. I had to set the idle at the speed I wanted it at and "putt" all the way there, but I got it out of the water. When I remove the cables, the gears move freely. When I attach the shift cable, I am unable to move it forward. Could it be the gear itself or the shift rod?

Re: installing a new remote control shifter box

Try this. Disconnect the shift cable from the shift arm at motor. Then, with a helper slowly turning the prop, see if you can manually shift it into forward, neutral and reverse using the shift lever. That will narrow it down to the remote control if it shifts OK at the motor... Let us know and we'll go from there...

BTW- What did you mean when you said "reverse gave out on me"? And did it work OK before all this??
