What do I need to install an outboard with a long shaft on a transom that is made to take a short shaft outboard?

Nothing if you're not concerned about performance.

If you want it to work correctly you need to raise the height of the current transom or use a jack plate.

Very nice! Where did you get the material to make this?

I made the one in the thumbnail with four pieces of salvaged angle aluminum. It has the benefit of being adjustable, up and down. The backer is 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood glued together.

Note that the angled pieces are longer than they appear.

If you want to use aluminum plate, you can usually find sections on Ebay. 1/4" is more than adequate if you make with wood sandwiched between. http://cgi.ebay.com/6061-T6-Aluminu...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa0db5af3

I did the same with mine, put the plate on yesterday, had to raise almost 2 inches cause the transom wasn't tall enough. Had a local welder make it , it's all tig welded, pretty cheap to do and strong as can be.
