Installing a killswitch

Good evening,
We recently purchased a 2001 Godfrey Sweetwater 18ft pontoon with a 40 Johnson. The ignition switch didn't work properly as in it didn't kill the motor. The guy we bought it from just choked it and it killed the motor. Of course, after getting it home today, tried exactly what he did and it didn't work. My question is: how do I install a killswitch (toggle or otherwise) or how hard would it be to install another ignition switch and would that in itself solve my problem? Thank you in advance for any help.

Howdy

ignition switch didn't work

To stop a 2 cycle OB motor the magneto needs to be grounded. The standard 6 pin ignition switch has 2 magneto connections. One goes to the magneto and the other goes to ground, To install a kill switch you just add another connection to the Mag wire between the switch.

Could be a broken wire or a bad switch. Great wiring diagrams above. Those and a little trouble shooting should get you going. Or, call a local mobile mechanic and let him do it for you. Should be a fairly simple (reasonably inexpensive) project.

Hi and thanks for the responses. I followed the diagram to install a killswitch. I can hear the solenoid clicking but the started wont turn over now, it would start before but wouldn't turn off without choking. . Idk. I've ordered a new ignition switch.

While the ignition switch might have an issue, the kill switch should have no issue with the solenoid. Make sure to check the wiring as there may be another issue
